Pride Parade History

The first edition of the parade took place in June 1972, when a large number of people gathered in downtown Detroit to protest homophobic laws. This moment was especially significant in our city’s history, and marked the first step in working for the recognition of LGBTQ rights.

Indeed, the mission of the Motor City Pride Parade is to foster pride and respect for the LGBTQ community in Detroit. There are three main pillars of this significant event:

  • Advocate for equal rights and protections for all Michiganians who are part of the community.
  • Connect with organizations, businesses, clubs and individuals in general to learn about special activities and events to achieve full equality.
  • Celebrate social advances for the LGBTQ community and, of course, celebrate our true selves.
